Franz Karl Achard (28 April – 20 April ) was a German (Prussian) chemist, geoscientist, physicist, and biologist. His principal discovery was the production of sugar from sugar beets. In , with the support of King Frederick William II, he opened the first sugar beet refinery near Steinau (now Scinawa). The sugar beet industry quickly spread to Bohemia, and later France. This helped make sugar a common item instead of a luxury product, and helped Prussia counter a French embargo on sugar during the Napoleonic Wars.
